International Anti-Corruption Day is celebrated globally on December 9 to raise awareness on corruption and on the role of the United Nations Convention against Corruption in combating and preventing it.
The consequences of corruption are high and cause economic losses, poverty and inequality, dysfunction of public and private institutions, impunity for crime, partial justice, populism, organized crime, climate change and conflicts that lead to loss of life.
Kosovo, as a young country, has continued to jeopardize the functioning of democracy due to the high presence of corruption. The Global Coalition Against Corruption, Transparency International, has published the Corruption Perceptions Index for 2020 where it ranked Kosovo 104th among 180 countries. According to this index, Kosovo has 36 out of a total of 100 points, which shows that our country needs to take drastic steps in combating this phenomenon.
This day provides an opportunity for political leaders, governments, legal bodies and other groups of society to join forces against corruption and fight it effectively.
